Ancient Traianoupolis was founded by the Roman Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD) along the Via Egnatia. The thermal baths of the area operated without interruption across centuries: from the Roman thermae, through the domed Ottoman bathhouses of the 16th century that still stand behind the medieval Han, to the modern facilities that Renel is now taking on.
Renel has signed a contract with the Tourist Thermal Enterprise of the Municipality of Alexandroupolis (TIEDA) for the functional and energy upgrade of the complex.
The scope of works:
- Renovation of interior spaces, including an accessible bathroom and underfloor heating system
- New suspended ceiling with integrated thermal insulation
- Restoration of the external building envelope, including masonry repointing and relocation of the electrical supply
- Upgrade of the underground thermal water network, with a new 30-metre pipeline from the borehole to the building
A project of this scale, in a site of this history, carries more than an energy impact. The increase in visitor numbers that upgraded facilities will bring feeds directly into the local economy of a region that holds considerable untapped tourism potential.
